Certification Bodies & IRF Verification

Independent verification under the IRF

The Independent Reporting Framework (IRF) incorporates an independent verification process to support confidence in the accuracy and completeness of self-reported NDPE data. Verification is conducted by qualified third-party Certification Bodies (CBs) and auditors using the POCG IRF Verification Protocol.

The protocol was developed for the Palm Oil Collaboration Group (POCG) by Peterson and provides a consistent approach to assessing reported data, supporting transparency across the palm oil supply chain, and enabling downstream stakeholders to better understand progress towards NDPE commitments.

Who can conduct IRF verification?

IRF verification may be undertaken by suitably qualified Certification Bodies and auditors with relevant expertise in palm oil sustainability verification, auditing, and NDPE implementation.

Verification providers are expected to demonstrate:

  • Experience with palm oil certification or assurance systems, including RSPO, MSPO, ISPO, or comparable frameworks.

  • Understanding of NDPE implementation and supply chain reporting requirements.

  • Knowledge of satellite monitoring and related methods used to assess deforestation and peat-related risks.

  • Auditor training and competency aligned with recognised international auditing standards.

  • Independent review processes to ensure the quality and consistency of verification findings.

Verification process and expectations

The IRF Verification Protocol establishes a common framework for verifying the accuracy and completeness of information submitted through the IRF. This includes requirements relating to methodology, evidence review, sampling approaches, verification reporting, and quality assurance processes.

The verification process is designed to provide assurance that IRF profiles accurately reflect the production base associated with the reported data and are supported by sufficient evidence.

POCG IRF V6.0 Data Verification Protocol

Developed for the Palm Oil Collaboration Group (POCG) by Peterson, this protocol provides guidance for Certification Bodies and auditors undertaking IRF verification activities and sets out the requirements and process for verifying self-reported NDPE IRF data.
